GMCBeats Workshops goes intergalactic

2015 marks 20 years of Science Week; a national, annual event that celebrates the fascinating worlds of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).

To launch ‘A Festival of Space’ for Science Week at CIT Blackrock Castle Observatory (CITBCO) the Cork Youthreach Mahon group have written, recorded and featured in their own video for ‘It’s All About That Space’. The song is created in collaboration with GMCBeats Workshops and features Mercedes O’Callaghan, Ryan Dorgan & Johnny Quilligan rapping about space science in their art-meets-science-meets-music piece that tells the story of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Maths) and STEM careers.

Dr. Niall Smith, Head of Research at Cork Institute of Technology said “this ‘rap’ song made by a great group of young people from the Mahon Youtreach project in Cork is fascinating for its energy, musicality and sheer dynamism, but it’s truly remarkable for its content – careers in space science”.

Taking place this week from the 12th-14th ‘A Festival of Space’ at CITBCO will see numerous events being hosted for the public free of charge. A sample of some include the screening of award winning documentary ‘River Runner’ which uncovers the disturbing truth about the River Lee and ‘Know your Lichen’ family friendly workshop to explore the hidden world of Lichens on Thursday. On Friday, they’re running a Giant Arcade Games Night with some of the greatest retro games ever released and a talk with IMERC on Earth Observations for a Safer Planet focusing on climate change, migration and the depleting planetary resources on Earth. Weather dependent Stargazing, BuildSkills Workshop and Sex in the Stars (an adult’s only talk) will all take place on Saturday.

There is no booking required for any of the free events at CITBCO but spaces are limited so it’s first come, first served. For more information have a look at the events section on for a full list of everything taking place.

YWIC Rap Crew on Junior Eurovision tonight

Keep an eye out for YWIC Crew (or as the production company chose to call them “Na Cork Rappers”) on TG4 for the Junior Eurovision Song Contest heats. They’re performing “Is Maith Liom É” which is an “as Gaeilge” version of the track below that GMCBeats Workshops made for Webwise Ireland’s Safer Internet Day campaign back in February.

Safer Internet Day 2015 – I Like It [Official Music Video] from PDST Technology in Education on Vimeo.

The show will be aired on Sunday October 18th at 20:30 (GMT) on TG4 and you will be in the hands of Irish presenter Eoin McDermott. For international viewers you can watch online at the TG4 live streaming by clicking on the link HERE

The young rappers were mentored by Garry McCarthy (GMCBeats) all throughout the process. Unfortunately, as he was out of the country during filming, Garry couldn’t make it to the TV heats so he chose Bubba Shakespeare to support them on the day.

Best of luck to Cathal, Julia, Adam, Ryan and Danny from the rap projects at Youth Work Ireland Cork and Music Generation Cork City.

Rap Kids Ready for Junior Eurovision

5 young Cork rappers involved in YWIC‘s rap workshops facilitated by Garry McCarthy (GMCBeats) have been selected out of hundreds of entries for the TV auditions of this year’s Junior Eurovision. They are in with a chance of representing Ireland in the finals in Bulgaria.

The original song, “Is Maith Liom É”, is the only rap entry and performed completely in the Irish language. The original English version, “I Like It”, was written, produced and recorded at GMCBeats/Music Generation studio kabin in Knocknaheeny as part of the Webwise anti-cyberbullying campaign and it was performed at Dublin Castle in February 2015 for Safer Internet Day and the music video (created by Limbo) went viral in the days after.

Music Video Still

They will be traveling to Dublin on 8th of September for the filming in RTE Studios and the show will be aired on TG4 soon after.

Also we have to say a MASSIVE thanks to Neepa Sodhi for translating the lyrics into Irish for us.

Best of luck to the YWIC Crew!
